Short answer
AI B2B ads are paid placements inside or next to AI assistant answers (ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot), aimed at business buyers. They are matched to the topic of a conversation, not to job titles or companies. In October 2026 ChatGPT is the only one where you choose the buyer questions yourself: it’s self-serve in 63 countries, from $25 a day in the US. Plan a 90-day test of at least two campaigns, judge it on the companies and meetings it brings, and run it alongside work on your organic AI visibility.
What are AI B2B ads?
The phrase is used in two ways, and it helps to separate them before you spend anything.
- Ads inside AI assistants, aimed at business buyers. A buyer asks ChatGPT which accounting software suits a 300-person logistics company, and a labelled sponsored block appears under the answer. This is what we mean by AI B2B ads in this guide, and what most of the new budget is chasing.
- AI-powered B2B advertising. Automation inside existing platforms, such as AI-built LinkedIn campaigns or Google’s keywordless search campaigns. Useful, but a different subject. We cover it in AI-powered B2B advertising vs ads inside AI assistants.
Other names for the first meaning are LLM ads, conversational advertising and AI-native advertising. Our name for the B2B discipline around them is Conversational Intent Advertising.
Why AI B2B ads matter now
B2B buyers have moved part of their research into AI chats. In a G2 survey of 1,076 B2B software buyers reported in March 2026, 51% said they now start research in an AI chatbot, 69% chose a different vendor than planned because of what a chatbot told them, and one in three bought from a vendor they hadn’t heard of before.
The ad inventory followed. OpenAI said on 31 August 2026 that ChatGPT ads had passed a $1 billion annualised revenue run rate in under 200 days, with tens of thousands of advertisers, and opened self-serve buying in Europe, India, the Middle East and North Africa. For a B2B marketer, three things are new:
- The buyer describes the situation. Problem, company size, industry, current tools and goal often arrive in one message. No keyword or job-title filter carries that much context.
- The shortlist forms in the answer. If AI names three vendors and you aren’t one, you may never see the visit.
- Competition is still thin. Most B2B categories have few advertisers on AI placements. That won’t last.
Where they run in 2026
| Placement | How you buy | Can you choose the conversations? | B2B view |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | OpenAI Ads Manager (self-serve, 63 countries) or a partner | Yes, with context hints | The main channel for B2B today |
| Google AI Overviews | Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns | No separate targeting or reporting | Part of your search budget |
| Google AI Mode | New formats announced May 2026, testing in the US | Not yet | Watch the lead-gen “Business Agent” beta |
| Microsoft Copilot | Microsoft Advertising campaigns | Standard Microsoft targeting, incl. LinkedIn profile data | Worth a modest test |
| Perplexity | Programme being wound down | – | Not a place to start |

How targeting works when you can’t pick job titles
This is the part that surprises B2B teams most. In ChatGPT you can’t target companies, domains, IP addresses, job titles or seniority, and advertisers never see what users typed. What you can set:
- Context hints: free-text descriptions of the conversations your ad should match, up to 2,000 per ad group.
- Location and device: countries and regions; desktop web, iOS and Android apps and web.
- Customer lists: hashed emails or phone numbers. Using a list to include people needs 25,000 matched users, so most B2B lists only work as exclusions. Custom audiences aren’t available for campaigns in the EEA or Switzerland.
- Bidding: per 1,000 views, per click, or optimised for conversions.
So the B2B method flips: you choose the problem before the click, and name the company after it. A hint like “month-end close software for a 300-person logistics company on NetSuite” only matches buyers who look like yours. Company identification on your site then turns the visit into a named account. Ads are shown to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users don’t see them, which is why organic AI visibility matters alongside. What they cost
| Item | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT minimum daily budget | $25, £15 or €15 | OpenAI |
| Reported ChatGPT CPC | About $3–5 | Index Lab |
| Reported ChatGPT CPM | About $25–60 | Index Lab |
| Published B2B pilot | $5.68 CPC, 0.66% CTR on $1,470 | Windmill Strategy |
| LinkedIn, for comparison | $6–15 CPC, 0.4–1.0% CTR | ClickMinded |
| Our B2B planning range | $4.50–6.50 per click | AnswerBid assumption |
A fair test needs at least two campaigns, which at the US minimum is about $1,500 a month of media, for 60–90 days. Add management, creative, tracking and identification, whether that’s your team’s time or an AI B2B ads agency’s fee. Detail and a budget planner: ChatGPT ads cost for B2B.
How they compare with LinkedIn and search ads
| ChatGPT ads | LinkedIn ads | Search ads | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Triggered by | The topic of a conversation | Who the person is | A keyword |
| Intent signal | Declared, in the buyer’s own words | Inferred from profile | Short query |
| Account targeting | No, identify after the click | Yes, company lists | No |
| Best stage | Comparing vendors, building a shortlist | Warming up a buying group | Searching for a named solution |
They work best together: LinkedIn warms up the buying group, AI ads reach the account when it’s comparing, and identification connects the two. See CIA vs LinkedIn ABM and LLM ads vs search ads.
How to start: six steps
- Map the questions. Collect 30–60 questions buyers ask before they choose a vendor like you: from sales calls, reviews, support tickets and AI answer tracking.
- Tier them by intent. Problem, category, vendor and decision questions. Put most of the budget on the last two.
- One ad group per question. 20–60 context hints each: different phrasings of the same question.
- Write the ad as the next answer. Short title, one concrete line, a link to the page that answers exactly that question. Examples.
- Measure companies, not clicks. Conversion tracking, UTMs and company identification from day one.
- Reallocate weekly. Move budget to the questions that bring companies that fit your profile.

In-house or an AI B2B ads agency?
Ads Manager is self-serve, so you can run it yourself. The hard parts aren’t the buttons: question research, B2B creative, tracking and turning anonymous clicks into named accounts sales will call. An AI B2B ads agency makes sense if you don’t have a paid-media specialist with time to learn a new channel, or if you want ads and organic AI visibility run as one programme. Our guides: how to choose an AI B2B ads agency, questions to ask and in-house vs agency.
What they can’t do
- Change the answer. OpenAI says ads are separate and don’t influence what ChatGPT says. Being named in the answer is organic work: AEO and GEO.
- Reach everyone. Users on paid ChatGPT plans, including company Business and Enterprise accounts, see no ads.
- Replace account targeting. You can’t aim at a named account list in ChatGPT. Keep LinkedIn for that.
- Prove themselves in three weeks. Plan for 60–90 days.
Questions
Are AI B2B ads worth it for a small company?
Often, yes, because the minimums are low ($25 a day in the US, £15 in the UK) and you choose the exact buyer questions. Start with two campaigns on vendor and decision questions, and judge them on the companies they bring. Budgets for small B2B companies.
Do decision-makers actually see these ads?
Some do. ChatGPT ads show to Free and Go users. Executives on company Business or Enterprise plans don’t see ads, but many buyers research on personal accounts. Pair ads with organic AI visibility to reach both.
Can I run them in Poland and the rest of Europe?
Yes. Self-serve ChatGPT ads opened in Europe on 31 August 2026, and OpenAI’s availability list includes all EU countries. In the EEA and Switzerland, custom audiences aren’t available and ad personalisation is limited, so targeting relies on context hints.
How long before you see results?
Clicks start in the first week. Identified companies come within two to four weeks. Meetings and pipeline usually need 60–90 days, depending on your sales cycle.
Are AI B2B ads the same as ads made with AI?
No. These ads are placed inside AI assistants. Ads written or targeted with AI tools can run anywhere. You can use either without the other.
