Short answer
Conversational advertising is paid promotion placed inside AI chat experiences such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot or AI chat apps, shown as a labelled sponsored unit within an ongoing dialogue. Unlike search ads, which match one query, conversational ads are matched to the wider conversation, so they reach buyers in the middle of a research task.
Two meanings of the term
- Today's main meaning: ads inside third-party AI assistants, such as ChatGPT ads
- The older meaning: a brand's own chatbot, WhatsApp or direct-message marketing, which came before generative AI
In this guide we mean the first: paid placements inside AI assistants that buyers use to research vendors.
How a conversational ad reaches a buyer
- A buyer asks the assistant a question, for example which tools fit a 300-person finance team
- The assistant writes its answer
- The platform checks eligibility: the topic isn't sensitive and the user can see ads (in ChatGPT, logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans)
- A relevance-weighted auction picks an ad
- The ad appears below the answer, labelled as sponsored
- The buyer clicks through to a page that continues the conversation
- The company behind the visit can be identified and passed to sales
Where it fits in the B2B funnel
Conversational ads sit in the middle of the funnel, when buyers compare vendors. That moment matters: in G2's 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B software buyers, 51% said they start research in an AI chatbot and 69% chose a different vendor than planned because of what a chatbot told them.
How to measure it
- Delivery in the platform: impressions, clicks, cost per click and cost per 1,000 impressions
- Conversions through the platform's pixel and server-side events, with the click reference passed to your forms
- View-through conversions reported separately from clicks
- Company level: which companies visited from each ad group, and which became opportunities
Questions
Can we target job titles with conversational ads?
Not in ChatGPT. You target topics and context, and can upload hashed customer lists as custom audiences. Company identification after the click shows which companies came.
Is conversational advertising only for big budgets?
No. In ChatGPT the US minimum is $25 a day per campaign, so a two-campaign B2B test starts at about $1,500 a month.
