Short answer
GEO (generative engine optimization) means making your content more likely to be used and cited in answers generated by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Copilot. The term comes from a 2023 research paper that found adding quotations, statistics and source citations could raise visibility in generated answers by up to about 40%.
Where the term comes from
Aggarwal and colleagues (Princeton, Georgia Tech, Allen Institute, IIT Delhi) introduced GEO in a paper first posted in November 2023. They built a benchmark of queries and measured how often a source's content appeared in generated answers.
What GEO covers
- Content: clear, quotable facts, statistics, quotations and sources
- Presence: being mentioned in the third-party pages AI reads
- Access: letting AI search crawlers reach your pages
- Measurement: tracking how often you are named and cited
What it is not
- Not a trick to make AI recommend you: nobody can guarantee that
- Not keyword stuffing, which reduced visibility in the paper's tests
- Not separate from SEO: Google says AI features rely on the same fundamentals
Questions
Is GEO the same as AEO?
They overlap. AEO (answer engine optimization) focuses on giving direct answers; GEO focuses on being used and cited by generative systems. In practice teams do both.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. Google says there are no special requirements for AI features beyond normal SEO best practices, and ChatGPT search relies on web search too.
