Short answer
Most AI answers about current products are grounded in live web search. ChatGPT search rewrites a question into one or more searches and may use partner search providers; Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode use "query fan-out" across subtopics and show a wide set of supporting links. To be cited, a page must be crawlable, indexed and useful for the specific question.
Two routes into an answer
| Route | How you get in | Speed |
|---|---|---|
| Live retrieval (search) | Crawlable, indexed pages that answer the question | Days to weeks |
| Model knowledge (training) | Being widely and consistently described across the web | Months, at the next model update |
What each platform says
- Google: pages must be indexed and eligible for a snippet; no extra requirements
- ChatGPT search: allow OAI-SearchBot; results are ranked on several factors and placement isn't guaranteed
- Perplexity and others: cite sources openly; Reddit and independent articles feature heavily in studies
