How to choose an AI B2B ads agency: 12 criteria and a scorecard

By the AnswerBid teamPublished 15 October 20265 min read

Short answer

Choose an AI B2B ads agency on three things: proof it runs ads inside AI assistants today (live campaigns, not slides), B2B measurement that ends in named companies and meetings, and commercial terms that let you leave. Score shortlisted agencies on the 12 criteria below, ask each to run a live audit of your buyers’ questions, and walk away from anyone who promises job-title targeting in ChatGPT, guaranteed AI recommendations or a 12-month lock-in for an untested channel.

What an AI B2B ads agency is, and isn’t

An AI B2B ads agency plans, runs and measures paid placements inside AI assistants, mainly ChatGPT today, for companies that sell to businesses. The good ones also work on organic visibility in AI answers and identify which companies the traffic comes from.

It isn’t the same as an “AI marketing agency” that uses AI tools to write content or automate LinkedIn and Google campaigns. Many agencies now describe themselves with both labels. The difference matters when you hire: one has learnt a new ad platform with new limits, the other has added tools to old ones. The two meanings explained.

Why choosing one is harder than usual

  • The channel is young. ChatGPT ads opened to self-serve advertisers in 2026, so nobody has years of results.
  • Published B2B evidence is thin. One of the few public B2B pilots, from Windmill Strategy, ran $1,470 over a month and stopped at clicks.
  • Rankings mix things up. The “best ChatGPT ads agencies” lists published in 2026 by Powered by Search and Directive include full-service paid-media and SEO firms alongside specialists. Useful for a longlist, not a decision.

So judge what the agency can show and explain today, not its size or its awards.

The 12 criteria

Channel knowledge

  1. Hands-on in Ads Manager. Can they show you a live campaign, ad groups and context hints, with client details hidden?
  2. Knows the limits. Free and Go users only; no company or job-title targeting; customer lists need 25,000 matched users to include; no custom audiences in the EEA or Switzerland. If they get these wrong, the plan will be wrong.
  3. Builds on buyer questions. Ad groups around questions at each decision stage, not a keyword list copied from Google Ads.

B2B fit

  1. B2B clients and sales cycles. Experience with deals that take months and involve several people.
  2. Ads and organic visibility together. The same buyer questions drive both. An agency that only buys ads can’t help the buyers who never see them.
  3. Company identification and CRM routing. Named companies, scored against your ideal customer profile, in your CRM or Slack.

Measurement

  1. Tracking set up properly. OpenAI pixel and Conversions API, UTMs and the click identifier kept through redirects.
  2. Reports that reach pipeline. Weekly reporting with companies, meetings and pipeline, not only CTR and CPC. Ask for a sample report.
  3. Your account, your data. You create the Ads Manager account and invite the agency; OpenAI doesn’t let agencies create advertiser accounts on a client’s behalf.

Commercial terms

  1. Published or clear pricing. Fee separate from media, and media billed to your card by the platform.
  2. Short commitment. Monthly terms, or a 90-day test with a clear exit.
  3. Senior people and honest limits. The people on the sales call do the work, and they tell you what they can’t promise.

A weighted scorecard you can copy

Score each criterion 0–5, average within the area and multiply by the weight divided by 5. These weights are our suggestion; shift them if, for example, you already have strong analytics in-house.

A two-week selection process

  1. Days 1–3: longlist and brief. Five agencies at most. Send the same one-page brief: product, ideal customer, markets, current channels, budget range.
  2. Days 4–8: live audit. Ask each to run 10 of your buyers’ questions through ChatGPT and show where an ad would appear, what it would say and which competitors the answers name. This is the best test of real skill.
  3. Days 9–11: proposals. Compare plans on the same denominator: expected cost per fitting company and a 90-day decision rule.
  4. Days 12–14: references and terms. Speak to one current client. Check account ownership, exit terms and who will do the work.

Our list of 25 questions to ask an AI B2B ads agency helps with steps 2 and 4.

Red flags

  • Promises to target job titles or named companies inside ChatGPT.
  • Guarantees that ChatGPT will recommend you.
  • Wants to own the ad account, the pixel or the data.
  • Reports CTR and impressions only.
  • Asks for 6–12 months up front for a channel you haven’t tested.
  • Can’t explain the difference between the ad and the answer.

Where AnswerBid fits

We’re an AI B2B ads agency of five senior specialists in Poland, the UK and India, working only with B2B SaaS, tech and IT companies. We run ChatGPT ads, AI visibility (AEO and GEO) and company identification as one programme, with a weekly report and monthly terms, from $990 a month plus media. If you need one agency to run large LinkedIn and Google Ads programmes too, a full-service paid-media agency may suit you better, and we’re happy to share identified accounts with them. Questions

Should I use my current agency or a specialist AI B2B ads agency?

Ask your current agency the criteria above. If it already runs ChatGPT ads for B2B clients and reports companies and pipeline, keep it. If it would be learning the channel on your budget, a specialist is usually faster.

How many agencies really run ChatGPT ads for B2B?

Nobody publishes a count. 2026 rankings list 10–25 agencies each, but many are general paid-media or SEO firms. Ask to see live work.

How long should a first engagement be?

Ninety days. That’s enough for clicks, identified companies and early meetings, and short enough to stop if it isn’t working.

Do I need an agency at all?

No. Ads Manager is self-serve. An agency is worth it when nobody in-house has time to learn the channel, or when you want ads, AI visibility and identification run together.
