What are LLM ads? Advertising inside AI assistants

By the AnswerBid teamVerified 13 October 20262 min read

Short answer

LLM ads are paid placements shown inside or next to answers generated by large language model (LLM) assistants, such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. They are matched to the conversation rather than to a single keyword, labelled as sponsored and kept separate from the answer. In October 2026 the main self-serve option is ChatGPT ads, bought in OpenAI's Ads Manager.

Where LLM ads appear in 2026

LLM ads, also called AI ads or conversational ads, now run on a handful of platforms. They are bought in different ways and have different rules, so it helps to see them side by side.

How an LLM ad is chosen

In ChatGPT, OpenAI picks eligible ads using the conversation context, the ad itself, its landing page and the context hints the advertiser wrote. It then runs a relevance-weighted second-price auction, so a more relevant ad can win at a lower bid. The winning ad appears below the response, labelled as sponsored. The answer itself is not changed by the ad.

Google works differently: ads in AI Overviews come from your existing campaigns, using broad match or keywordless targeting, and you can't target or report AI Overview placements separately.

What makes LLM ads different

  • Matched to a conversation, not a keyword list
  • Buyers arrive mid-research, often with a specific need such as pricing or an integration
  • No job-title or firmographic targeting: you target the topic, then identify the company after the click
  • Strict placement rules: no ads next to health, politics and other sensitive topics, in Temporary Chats or for users under 18

What B2B teams should do first

  1. List 10–20 questions your buyers actually ask AI assistants
  2. Group them by topic: category, comparison, pricing, integration and problem
  3. Build one ad group per topic, with its own context hints and a matching landing page
  4. Identify the companies behind the visits and send ideal-fit ones to sales
  5. Judge results on named companies and pipeline, not clicks alone

Questions

Are LLM ads the same as AI ads?

Mostly. "AI ads" is the broader term and can include AI-made creative. "LLM ads" means ads placed inside or beside the answers of large language model assistants.

Do LLM ads change what the AI says?

No. In ChatGPT, ads are labelled as sponsored and kept separate from the answer, and the organic answer is not influenced by advertisers.

How much do LLM ads cost?

For ChatGPT, agencies report about $3–5 per click. The minimum budget in the US is $25 a day per campaign.
