Short answer
AI-native advertising means ads designed for AI interfaces rather than copied from search or display. They are matched to the meaning of a conversation, written to answer the buyer's next question, and judged on what happens after the click. Examples include ChatGPT ads, sponsored follow-up prompts in AI chat apps and AI agents that start from an ad.
Built for the conversation, not bolted on
Display ads rent space next to content. Search ads match a typed keyword. AI-native ads work inside a multi-turn conversation: the system reads what the person is trying to do and shows a labelled sponsored unit that is relevant to that task.
That changes the job of the ad. It no longer has to interrupt someone; it has to be the most useful next step for a person who is already researching.
Three traits of AI-native ads
- Context matching: platforms use the conversation and the advertiser's context hints, which are descriptions of when the ad is relevant, not keyword lists
- Task continuation: the ad answers the next question, such as pricing, integrations or a comparison
- Interactive formats: sponsored follow-up prompts and polls in AI chat apps, and Sponsored Agents in ChatGPT, a limited alpha in which a conversation with a business starts from an ad
What changes for B2B marketers
| Old habit | AI-native version |
|---|---|
| Keyword lists | Groups of buyer questions by topic |
| One landing page for every ad | One page per question type: pricing, integration, comparison |
| Retargeting individuals | Identifying the company after the click |
| Click-through rate as the goal | Named ideal-fit companies and pipeline |
| Copy written for scanning | Copy that answers one specific question |
What doesn't count as AI-native
- Search ads reworded and pasted into a new platform
- The same homepage promoted for every topic
- Claims your landing page can't back up, which ad policies don't allow
Questions
Is AI-native advertising the same as native advertising?
No. Native advertising matches the look of a publisher's content. AI-native advertising matches the conversation in an AI assistant and is clearly labelled as sponsored.
Do we need new creative for AI-native ads?
Usually yes. Ads that answer one buyer question, with a landing page for that question, fit these platforms better than generic brand ads.
