Technical AEO

Reading server logs for AI bot activity

By the Answerbid teamVerified 12 October 20262 min read

Short answer

Filter your server or CDN logs by user agent for OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, OAI-AdsBot, Googlebot and Bingbot. Look at which URLs they request, response codes and frequency. ChatGPT-User visits are triggered by users asking about a page, which can hint at real interest.

What to look for

  • 403 or 429 responses (blocked)
  • Key pages never fetched (discovery issue)
  • ChatGPT-User spikes on pricing or comparison pages
  • Verify IPs against the published JSON lists

Questions

Can user agents be faked?
