How Google AI Overviews and AI Mode choose links

By the Answerbid teamVerified 12 October 20262 min read

Short answer

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode use query fan-out, issuing related searches across subtopics, and show a wider and more diverse set of links than classic search. Any page that is indexed and eligible to show a snippet can be a supporting link; there are no additional technical requirements.

Google's guidance

  • No special optimisation, AI text files or schema needed
  • Allow crawling in robots.txt and on your CDN
  • Internal links so content is findable
  • Important content in text form
  • Structured data consistent with visible text
  • Keep Merchant Center and Business Profile current

When they appear

AI Overviews show only when Google judges them additive to classic results, so many queries don't trigger them. AI Mode suits complex, multi-step and comparison queries.
