Effective frequency in B2B: plan reach by account, not by person

AnswerBid teamBy the AnswerBid teamPublished 19 October 20263 min read

Short answer

Plan B2B frequency at two levels: per person, so each buying committee member sees you often enough to remember you, and per account, so several people at the same company do. Use 3+ reach, the share of the audience that sees you three times or more, rather than average frequency, which hides people seeing you once and a few seeing you a dozen times. Because only a small share of accounts is in market at once, steady frequency over months beats short bursts.

Why average frequency misleads

Average frequency is impressions divided by people reached. An average of 4 can mean everyone saw you four times, or that half saw you once and a few active users saw you twelve times. Platforms deliver more to active users, so the second pattern is the normal one. Plan and report the distribution instead: how many people saw you once, twice, three times or more.

Use 3+ reach

Plan (illustrative: $10,000 at $15 CPM, 250,000 people)Result
Impressions666,667
Unique reach232,600 (93%)
Average frequency2.9
Reached three times or more124,500 (50%)

Just over half of the people reached see the ad three times or more. The rest see it once or twice, while a tail of very active users sees it far more often. The reach and frequency calculator shows the 1×, 2× and 3+ split and what a frequency cap does to it.

Frequency per account, not only per person

  • Per person: enough exposures for each committee member to recognise your name.
  • Per account: several people at the company exposed in the same period, so the name comes up in their conversations.
  • Report both: impressions per account per month and the share of accounts with two or more people reached. LinkedIn's company-level reporting and most ABM platforms show the second.

Why steady beats bursts in B2B

The B2B Institute's 95:5 rule says only about 5% of B2B buyers are in market at a given time. A two-week burst reaches the 5% who happen to be buying then. Steady frequency keeps you known by the other 95% until their turn comes. Binet and Field's B2B research points the same way: broad reach for brand, sharper targeting for activation.

A planning method

  1. Size the audience: matched accounts × reachable people per account.
  2. Pick a monthly frequency per person, often 6–12 on LinkedIn for a defined list.
  3. Check 3+ reach and the budget it needs in the calculator.
  4. Cap frequency on small lists so the platform doesn't pile impressions on a few people. Setting caps.
  5. After four weeks, compare engagement by account at each frequency band and move budget to where it still rises.

Questions

What is effective frequency?

The number of exposures needed before an ad has a useful effect. Planners often use three as a working threshold and track 3+ reach, but the right number depends on the message and the audience.

What is a good frequency for LinkedIn ABM?

Many teams plan a few impressions per member per week and review after four weeks by company engagement. There's no universal number.

Is high frequency bad?

Above the point where engagement stops rising, extra impressions are waste and can annoy. Small ABM audiences reach that point quickly.

Should frequency be counted per account?

Yes, as well as per person. An account where four people saw you twice each is in a better place than one where one person saw you eight times.
