Short answer
Cap frequency wherever the audience is small: ABM lists, retargeting pools and narrow LinkedIn audiences burn out fastest. Google lets you cap Display campaigns per day, week or month at campaign, ad group or ad level, and Video campaigns at campaign level only. DSPs cap per user, device or household. LinkedIn offers fewer controls, so manage it through audience size, budget and creative rotation. Loosen a cap when budget stops delivering; tighten it when engagement stops rising.
What each platform lets you cap
| Platform | Cap options |
|---|---|
| Google Display | Impressions per day, week or month; at campaign, ad group or ad level; or let Google optimise frequency |
| Google Video | Per day, week or month, campaign level only |
| Google Demand Gen | No frequency caps |
| Programmatic DSPs | Per user, device or household, usually per hour, day, week or flight; often per line item and per campaign |
| Fewer direct controls; frequency follows audience size, budget and creative rotation |
Why small audiences need caps most
A DSP or social platform spends the budget you give it. On a 5,000-person ABM list or a 30-day retargeting pool, it reaches most people quickly and then piles extra impressions on the most active few. Without a cap, a $5,000 month on a small list can mean 40 impressions for some people and one for others. The reach and frequency calculator shows how much budget a cap can actually deliver.
Starting caps by use case
| Use case | Starting cap per person | Review after |
|---|---|---|
| Retargeting site visitors | 3 a day, 15 a week | 2 weeks |
| ABM awareness on an account list | 2–5 a week | 4 weeks |
| Launch or event burst | 5–8 a week for the burst only | End of burst |
| Broad prospecting | 1–2 a day | 2 weeks |

Too tight or too loose?
- Too tight: the line under-delivers and spend stalls while reach is already near the audience size. Loosen the cap or widen the audience.
- Too loose: frequency climbs while engaged accounts and site visits from the list don't. Tighten the cap or move budget.
- Level matters: a cap per ad lets a person see five ads five times each. For ABM, cap at campaign level.
ABM caveat: IP-based audiences
When an account is targeted by IP, "one user" can be a whole office network, and remote staff may not be reachable at all. Caps per household or IP behave differently from caps per person. Check what your DSP caps on, and read the limits of IP-based ABM targeting.
Questions
Which Google campaigns support frequency caps?
Display and Video campaigns. Display caps can be set per day, week or month at campaign, ad group or ad level; Video caps only at campaign level. Demand Gen campaigns don't support them.
What frequency cap should I start with?
For retargeting, a few impressions per person per day or roughly 10–20 a week. For ABM awareness, 2–5 a week per person. Then adjust using engagement data.
Does a frequency cap raise CPM?
It can, slightly, because the platform has fewer people to bid on. On small audiences the waste it removes is usually worth more.
How do I cap LinkedIn?
LinkedIn gives advertisers fewer frequency controls than DSPs. Keep audiences large enough, set budgets from a planned frequency and rotate several ads.
