Short answer
Pacing compares spend to date with the plan for this point in the flight: pacing = actual spend ÷ (budget × days elapsed ÷ flight days). Treat 90–110% as on pace. Know each platform's rules before you react: Google Ads can spend up to twice the average daily budget on one day but no more than 30.4 times it in a month, and ChatGPT ads average daily budgets over a seven-day week. Fix under-pacing with reach before bids, and over-pacing with budget caps before cutting targeting.
The pacing formula
| Measure | Formula | Example: $30,000 over 30 days, day 12, $10,500 spent |
|---|---|---|
| Planned spend to date | Budget × days elapsed ÷ flight days | $12,000 |
| Pacing | Actual ÷ planned | 88% (under-pacing) |
| Projected end spend | Daily run rate × flight days | $26,250 |
| Daily budget to land on target | (Budget − spent) ÷ days left | $1,083 vs $875 run rate |

Know the platform's rules first
| Platform | Daily budget behaviour |
|---|---|
| Google Ads | Up to 2× the average daily budget on a day; no more than 30.4× in a month |
| ChatGPT ads | Averaged over a Sunday–Saturday week: up to 2× a day and 7× a week. Details |
| DSPs | Usually even or ASAP pacing per line item, with daily and flight caps you set |
| Daily or lifetime budgets; check delivery in Campaign Manager against plan |
A Google campaign at 150% on a Tuesday may be fine; a ChatGPT campaign that spent its week by Thursday will stop until Sunday while still showing as active.
Fixing under-pacing
- Check delivery blockers first: approvals, tracking, billing, audience size.
- Widen reach before raising bids: more questions or phrasings, broader job functions, extra placements.
- Raise bids in steps of 10–20%, not all at once; big jumps buy worse inventory.
- If the audience is simply too small, extend the flight or move budget.
Fixing over-pacing
- Lower the daily budget to the "land on target" figure.
- Add or tighten frequency caps on small audiences. How.
- Pause the weakest ad groups by cost per engaged account rather than cutting everything evenly.
A checking cadence
Daily in week one and after any change to bids, budgets or audiences; then two or three times a week. Pacing problems compound: a 10% gap in week one becomes a scramble in week four.
Questions
How do you calculate budget pacing?
Divide actual spend by planned spend to date, which is budget × days elapsed ÷ flight length. 100% means exactly on plan.
Why did Google spend more than my daily budget?
Google Ads can spend up to twice the average daily budget on a day to catch traffic peaks, but you won't be charged more than 30.4 times the average daily budget in a month.
How do ChatGPT ads daily budgets work?
They average over a Sunday-to-Saturday week: up to 2× the daily budget on a day and 7× over the week.
Should I pace evenly or front-load?
Even pacing is the default for always-on lines. Front-load only when the first weeks matter more, such as an event or a launch.
