Short answer
Set ABM budget per account bottom-up: people you need to reach at the account × impressions per person × CPM, plus that account's share of tools, content and direct mail. Then tier it: 1:1 accounts can justify dozens of times the budget of a 1:many account, because they carry custom content and executive time. If the per-account figure for a tier can't buy a few impressions a week for its buying committee, the list is too long for the budget.
The bottom-up formula
| Part | Formula |
|---|---|
| Media per account a month | People reached × impressions per person × CPM ÷ 1,000 |
| Fixed share per account | (Tools + content + mail + events) ÷ accounts in the tier |
| Budget per account | Media + fixed share |
Example: 8 people × 10 impressions a month at a $50 LinkedIn CPM is $4 of media per account a month. The ABM budget calculator adds programmatic, tools, content and mail.
Budget per account by tier
| Tier (fictional $250,000 a year) | Accounts | Weight | Per account a year | Per account a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1:1 | 10 | 80 | $9,091 | $758 |
| 1:few | 100 | 6 | $682 | $57 |
| 1:many | 800 | 1 | $114 | $9.47 |
Each tier gets budget in proportion to accounts × weight. Change the weights in the ABM tiering calculator.
What each tier's money buys
- 1:1, about $750 a month: bespoke content, an event seat or dinner, direct mail, LinkedIn and programmatic at high frequency to the whole committee.
- 1:few, about $55 a month: cluster landing pages and ads, LinkedIn to 6–10 people per account.
- 1:many, under $10 a month: programmatic and LinkedIn at a light frequency, plus the moment of the question in ChatGPT ads, which costs nothing per account until someone clicks.
Three checks
- Pressure: does the tier's media buy at least one impression per contact per week? Check with the programmatic ABM calculator.
- Audience size: is every LinkedIn audience above 300 matched members?
- Value: is budget per account well below the expected value of an engaged account (deal value × opportunity rate × win rate)?
Fail any one, and shorten the list before raising the budget.
Questions
How much should ABM cost per account?
It depends on tier and channel mix. In the worked example, 1:many accounts get about $114 a year, 1:few about $680 and 1:1 about $9,100. Use the calculators with your own CPMs.
What costs belong in an ABM budget?
Media, data and intent tools, content and creative, direct mail and events, and the share of team time you want to show. Keep media separate so you can compare channels.
Should budget per account be equal within a tier?
Start equal, then shift towards accounts showing engagement or intent each month.
How many accounts can a small budget cover?
Work back from pressure: budget ÷ (people per account × impressions per person × CPM ÷ 1,000). The programmatic ABM calculator does this for you.
