Short answer
ABM is usually run in three tiers. 1:1 (strategic ABM) treats each account as a market of one, with custom plays and sales working side by side. 1:few (ABM lite) groups accounts with the same problem into clusters. 1:many (programmatic ABM) uses data and media to reach hundreds or thousands of accounts. Size each tier by team capacity, give each a budget weight, and re-tier every quarter on fit, intent and engagement.
The three tiers
| Tier | Also called | Typical size | Typical plays |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1:1 | Strategic ABM | 5–20 accounts | Account plan, bespoke content, events, direct mail, executive outreach |
| 1:few | ABM lite | 50–300 accounts in clusters of 5–30 | Cluster landing pages and ads, industry events, tailored sequences |
| 1:many | Programmatic ABM | Hundreds to thousands | LinkedIn and programmatic at scale, AI ads, intent-led nurture |
The term account-based marketing was coined at ITSMA in 2003, and these three types are the ones practitioners first distinguished.
Size tiers by capacity
- 1:1: each account needs a named marketing owner, a sales partner and a plan. Few teams can run more than 20 well.
- 1:few: limited by how many clusters you can write content for. Three to six clusters is a common start.
- 1:many: limited by budget and audience minimums; every LinkedIn audience needs 300+ matched members.
Split the budget with weights
| Tier (fictional $250,000 a year) | Accounts × weight | Tier budget | Per account a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1:1 | 10 × 80 | $90,909 | $9,091 |
| 1:few | 100 × 6 | $68,182 | $682 |
| 1:many | 800 × 1 | $90,909 | $114 |
The weight says how many times a 1:many account's budget each account in the tier gets. Try different splits in the ABM tiering calculator.
Where AI ads fit
ChatGPT ads can't target accounts, but they catch the moment a buyer describes the problem. In a tiered program they do two jobs: cheap in-market coverage for 1:many accounts, and a promotion signal. An identified 1:many account that asked a decision-stage question deserves a 1:few play this month. More in AI ABM ads.
Re-tier every quarter
- Re-score fit with the ICP model and add the quarter's intent and engagement.
- Promote engaged accounts with strong fit; demote 1:1 accounts that went quiet for two quarters.
- Keep tier sizes inside capacity; promote only as many as you demote.
- Update LinkedIn and DSP lists the same week.
Questions
What is 1:1 ABM?
Strategic ABM: a custom program for a single account, built with sales, often with bespoke content, events and executive outreach.
What is 1:few ABM?
ABM lite: tailored programs for small clusters of accounts that share an industry, problem or trigger.
What is 1:many ABM?
Programmatic ABM: campaigns that use data and media to personalise at scale across hundreds or thousands of accounts.
Where do AI ads fit?
Mostly in 1:many, where question-led ChatGPT ads catch in-market accounts cheaply, and as a signal to promote an account to a higher tier.
