Short answer
Cost per engaged account is program or channel spend divided by the number of target accounts that met a written engagement rule in the period. Define the rule before launch, for example two or more people from the account on key pages in a month, or an ad engagement plus a site visit. Because it counts accounts rather than clicks, it lets you compare LinkedIn, programmatic and AI ads on the same basis, weeks before pipeline shows.
Formula and value test
| Measure | Formula | Example (fictional) |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per engaged account | Spend ÷ engaged target accounts | $10,000 ÷ 80 = $125 |
| Value of an engaged account | Deal value × opportunity rate × win rate | $40,000 × 15% × 25% = $1,500 |
| Value-to-cost ratio | Value ÷ cost | 12× |
The ABM ROI calculator shows cost per engaged account alongside pipeline and ROI.
Write the engagement rule first
- Specific: "two or more people from the account on pricing, comparison or integration pages within 30 days".
- Predictive: back-test it on last year's opportunities; engaged accounts should open opportunities at a clearly higher rate.
- Stable: keep it for the quarter, so trends mean something.
- Tiered if needed: stricter for 1:1 accounts, lighter for 1:many.
Comparing channels
| Channel (fictional month) | Spend | Engaged accounts touched | Cost per engaged account |
|---|---|---|---|
| $4,000 | 38 | $105 | |
| Programmatic ABM | $3,000 | 21 | $143 |
| ChatGPT ads | $2,000 | 19 | $105 |
An account touched by two channels counts for both, so totals add up to more than the program figure. That's fine for comparing channels; use the program figure for ROI.
A weekly report layout
- Engaged accounts this week and in the last 30 days, vs target.
- Cost per engaged account by channel and by tier.
- New engaged accounts by name, with the question or ad that brought them.
- Engaged accounts that became meetings or opportunities.
For AI ads, add the buyer question that preceded each engaged account. See ABM metrics when buyers research in AI.
Questions
What counts as an engaged account?
Whatever rule you agree predicts opportunities. Common rules: two or more people visiting key pages in 30 days; one identified visit to pricing or comparison pages; ad engagement plus a site visit in the same month.
How is it different from cost per lead?
It counts companies on your list that showed interest, whether or not anyone filled in a form. In B2B most visitors never do.
Can I compare channels on it?
Yes, if every channel uses the same rule and the same account list. Attribute an engaged account to the channels that touched it before the engagement.
What's a good cost per engaged account?
Compare it with the value of an engaged account: deal value × opportunity rate × win rate. Keep cost well below that value.
