Short answer
ABM ROI runs through the account funnel: target accounts × engagement rate × opportunity rate × win rate × deal value gives won revenue; subtract program cost and divide by cost. A CFO will accept it if three things hold: the period matches the sales cycle, only target accounts count, and a holdout group shows the program caused the lift. Until deals close, report pipeline multiple and cost per engaged account.
The account funnel
| Stage (fictional example) | Rate | Accounts or value |
|---|---|---|
| Target accounts | 300 | |
| Engaged | 40% | 120 |
| Opportunities | 15% of engaged | 18 |
| Won | 25% | 4.5 |
| Pipeline at $40,000 per deal | $720,000 | |
| Won revenue | $180,000 | |
| Program cost | $120,000 | |
| ROI · pipeline multiple | 50% · 6× |
Run your own in the ABM ROI calculator. Break-even here is cost ÷ (deal value × win rate) = 12 opportunities.
What finance will check
- Period: is the revenue from deals that could close inside the period? A nine-month cycle can't show ROI in quarter one.
- Scope: only target accounts, only deals opened after the program started.
- Revenue or margin: use gross profit if product margins differ a lot.
- Causality: would these accounts have bought anyway? Only a holdout answers that. How to run one.
Leading indicators while deals are open
| Quarter | Report |
|---|---|
| Q1 | Accounts reached, engaged accounts, cost per engaged account |
| Q2 | Opportunities, pipeline multiple, opportunity rate vs holdout |
| Q3–Q4 | Won revenue, ROI, win rate and deal size vs non-target deals |
What ROI misses
Most target accounts aren't buying this year; the B2B Institute's 95:5 rule puts the in-market share at about 5% at any time. A program that keeps you known by the rest builds future pipeline that a one-year ROI won't show. Report it honestly as a separate line: engaged accounts not yet in market.
Questions
How do you calculate ABM ROI?
(Won revenue from target accounts − program cost) ÷ program cost, over a period long enough for deals to close.
What if our sales cycle is nine months?
Report leading indicators in the first two quarters: engaged accounts, opportunities and pipeline multiple. Calculate ROI once the first cohort has had time to close.
Should ROI count influenced or sourced deals?
Show both, but base the investment case on incremental deals, measured against a holdout group.
What's a pipeline multiple?
Pipeline created from target accounts divided by program cost. It's the most useful early number when deals are still open.
