Short answer
CIA AI ads are ads placed on the intent expressed in an AI conversation, which is the core of Conversational Intent Advertising. The unit of reporting is the buyer question. A CIA dashboard puts five things on each question: how often AI answers name you, what the ad cost and returned, which companies arrived, how many fit your ICP, and what moved to pipeline. Ad platform numbers alone are not enough, because the value of a question shows up after the click.
Why the buyer question is the unit
Conversational Intent Advertising starts from the problem a buyer describes to an AI assistant, not from a keyword or an audience. In ChatGPT ads that intent is expressed through context hints at ad-group level, so one ad group usually maps to one cluster of buyer questions. Reporting should follow the same structure: spend, answers and accounts per question cluster.
The five views of a CIA dashboard
| View | Question it answers | Data |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | Which buyer questions matter, and where do we stand on each? | Ad groups matched to tracked AI prompts |
| Answers | Do AI assistants name us, and who do they name instead? | AI visibility tracking per assistant |
| Ads | What did each question cost and how did people respond? | Ads API: spend, clicks, CTR, CPC, conversions |
| Companies | Which companies arrived from each question, and do they fit? | Company identification plus ICP score |
| Pipeline | Which questions led to meetings and opportunities? | CRM |

Paid and organic coverage on one question
The CIA loop works when the ad and the organic answer support each other. We label each question by coverage:
- Covered: you run an ad and AI answers often name you.
- Paid only: you pay for the ad, but answers rarely name you. Fix the pages and sources AI cites.
- Organic only: answers name you, but you have no ad. Test an ad group if the question signals buying intent.
- Blind: neither. Decide whether the question is worth winning.
Matching ad groups to tracked prompts is done by comparing their topics. Each match should be checked by a person once, because short context hints can match the wrong prompt.
CIA AI ads metrics, per question
- Share of answers naming you, by assistant. See share of answers.
- Spend, CTR and CPC from the Ads API. CTR comes back as a ratio and spend can lag behind clicks by hours, so judge yesterday, not the last hour.
- Companies identified and fit rate.
- Cost per fitting company.
- Meetings and pipeline with a touch from that question.

How often to look
Daily data, weekly decisions. Impressions and clicks arrive within minutes, conversions need a day, and AI answer tracking runs daily. Budget moves and new ads are decided weekly. Page changes for AI visibility take weeks to show in answers, so judge them monthly. A live dashboard lets you look whenever you need; a report captures the decisions. Questions
What are CIA AI ads?
Ads in AI assistants, such as ChatGPT ads, bought and judged on the intent a buyer expresses in the conversation. CIA stands for Conversational Intent Advertising.
Can I build a CIA dashboard in Looker Studio?
Partly. Ad data can be pulled from the OpenAI Ads API, but you also need AI visibility tracking and company identification joined by question and UTM. That join is the hard part, and it is what our client dashboard does.
Which AI assistants should a CIA dashboard track?
At least ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini.
How long before CIA AI ads data is useful?
Ad and visibility data are useful from the first week. Company patterns need about four weeks of traffic, and pipeline depends on your sales cycle.
