Why it matters
In a G2 survey of 1,076 B2B software buyers, reported in March 2026, 51% said they start their research in an AI chatbot. 69% chose a different vendor than planned because of what a chatbot told them, and 1 in 3 bought from a vendor they had never heard of before. If AI doesn't name you, many buyers never reach your website.
What ChatGPT reads before it answers
- The web, through search. When ChatGPT searches, OpenAI says it rewrites the question into one or more targeted searches, sometimes partners with other search providers, and ranks results on "multiple factors". Placement isn't guaranteed.
- Its own crawler. To appear in ChatGPT search, your site must let OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, in. Sites that block it "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers". A robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to take effect.
- What the model already knows. Without a search, ChatGPT answers from its training data, which is why long-established, widely described brands have an advantage.
What the 2026 citation studies found
Two studies tracked which pages ChatGPT cites when buyers ask for B2B software:
| Study | Sample | Vendors' own pages | Independent content | Review sites |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DerivateX, June 2026 | 40 software categories, 188 cited sources, ChatGPT with web search | 51.1% | 22.9% independent and niche sites, plus 14.9% media | 1.1% (G2 and Capterra: none) |
| Growfusely, July 2026 | 128 buying questions, 1,739 citations, ChatGPT and Perplexity | 24% on ChatGPT, 12% on Perplexity | Together with vendor pages, nearly 79% | 7.3%, all review sites combined |
Both samples are small, and both publishers sell AI-visibility services, as we do. Read them as direction, not law. The direction is consistent: vendor comparison pages and independent articles carry most of the weight; review profiles help, but don't decide the answer. Community posts made up 9.6% of DerivateX's citations, and Growfusely found Reddit cited only by Perplexity.
Six steps to get recommended
- Let AI crawl you. Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, check that your host or CDN doesn't block crawler traffic, and make sure your key pages are indexed in Google and Bing.
- State your facts plainly. On one page each: who the product is for, company sizes, integrations by name, pricing or price ranges, time to go live, security and compliance. Use tables and short sentences that can be quoted as they stand.
- Publish an honest category comparison. In the DerivateX study, the most common vendor-owned page AI cited was a "best tools in this category" comparison. Write one that includes your competitors fairly and says who each option suits.
- Get into the independent pages AI already cites. Ask ChatGPT your buyers' questions, note the articles it cites, and offer those authors a correction, data or a quote. One relevant comparison article can supply several recommendations in a single answer.
- Keep your description the same everywhere. Website, LinkedIn, directories and review profiles should describe the same product for the same buyer. Conflicting descriptions give AI conflicting answers.
- Answer real buyer questions on your blog. One question per article, answered in the first two sentences, with a number or table worth quoting and a date at the top.
What not to rely on
- Review sites alone. Both studies put them at 7% of citations or less.
- llms.txt files. Cheap to add, but there is no published evidence yet that they change AI answers.
- Ads. OpenAI says ads run on separate systems and "do not influence ChatGPT's answers". Paid and organic visibility need separate work.
How to measure it
Pick 20 to 50 questions your buyers really ask, such as "best month-end close software for a 300-person company". Run them every month in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Copilot, and record three things: whether you are named, which competitors are named instead, and which pages are cited. The cited pages are your to-do list for step 4. Visits that arrive from AI answers show up in analytics too: here is how to find them.
Questions
How long does it take to get recommended?
Crawler access changes reach ChatGPT search in about a day. Changes to your pages and to articles about you show up as they are recrawled and re-ranked: expect weeks, not days. Answers from training data change only with new models, so brand-new products depend on search.
Do we need to be on G2 or Capterra?
It helps buyers who check them, and in some categories AI cites them more often. In both 2026 studies, though, review sites were a small share of what ChatGPT cited for software.
Will running ChatGPT ads improve our organic answers?
No. OpenAI says ads don't influence answers. Ads put you under the answer; organic work puts you in it.
